The BMW 8-series model is expected to debut either this year as a 2019 model or next year as a 2020 model. It takes the place of the 6-series. Several leaked photos have appeared on the internet in various places including the Bimmerpost forum. The photos show that it is tamer than the 8-series concept vehicle, but is still a sporty luxury coupe.
The Sporty 8-Series Coupe
The slender headlights and large grille with chrome trim are close to what was seen in the concept model. Still, the grille has a more aggressive stance than the grille on previous models.
However, the front bumper is more conventional, and the door mirrors have been redesigned with integrated turn signals. The rear features a dual exhaust and ventilated rear fascia with skinny taillights and some dark cladding on the rear lower bumper. The BMW 8-series doesn't look a lot like the concept car, but it still looks sporty and aggressive. It also features LED lights.
The new design is more modern and edgy, which tells everyone that there's some power under that luxury badge. Keep your eye out for this “slice of pure automotive fascination,” as the BMW 8-series was described by BMW CEO Harald Kruger.
Carscoops claims the BMW 8-series model will debut later in 2018, as does Jalopnik, but Motor Authority seems to think that it won't be released until 2019 as a 2020 model year. It may feature a 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V-8. This engine, which is in the 750i, makes 445 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
In all likelihood, a convertible variation will also be debuted at the same time. M8 versions will also be produced. Frank van Meel of BMW stated that the M8 will be more powerful than the M5 which makes 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.
Still in Testing
The BMW 8-series is still in testing, but it could still be released this summer. If BMW decides to create a fastback sedan, it would most likely be called the 8-Series Gran Coupe. Look for a debut of the 8-series coupe and possibly the convertible at the Geneva auto show in March 2018. If you don't see it, you may have to wait another year for the release, but you should see it in the auto shows early next year. BMW hasn't released much information about the BMW 8-series coupe or convertible other than to say that it features a blend of luxury and sporty dynamics.
Possible options may include a xDrive all-wheel-drive drivetrain and a V-12 like the old BMW 850i models. Colors, interior features, safety and security features and convenience features have not been mentioned as of yet.
