If you enjoy gazing upon the beauty of your vehicle up close or from afar, it is important to personally tackle the car washing process with the purpose to protect its gorgeous finish. Driving through an automated carwash, or using the wrong tools and techniques, can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s paint, leaving it scratched and marred all over. Thankfully, you can approach the car washing process using the right tools, products, and techniques to keep your finish gleaming in the sunlight for years to come.
Gather Your Supplies
Before you wash your vehicle, gather the following items:
- 5 Gallon Bucket
- Grit Guard
- Microfiber Wash Mitt
- Automotive Cleanser
- Chamois or Soft Towel
To get started, place the grit guard in the five-gallon bucket and add a capful of the selected automotive cleaner. Slowly fill up the bucket with hose water and place the clean wash mitts inside to soak up the soapy water.
Place Your Car in a Good Work Area
You should never wash your car in the sun, as the heat will dry the soap before you can rinse. Therefore, you should move your car into a clean, shady area before starting the wash process. Make sure you can stretch your hose well past the vehicle to rinse every section with ease.
Work from Top to Bottom
When you wash your vehicle, work from top to bottom, focusing on one small section at a time. Switch between your mitts as you work toward the dirtier sections of your vehicle. One wash mitt may be used for the top half of the vehicle, while you may need two or more for the bumpers and rocker panels. Always use an up and down or side to side cleaning motion while scrubbing with the wash mitt to avoid leaving circular marks in your vehicle’s finish.
Rinse Each Section Thoroughly
As you work on cleaning each section, make sure to take the time to thoroughly rinse away the wash water and soap suds before continuing the scrubbing process. Inspect the cleansed areas to determine if you have cleared away all dirt and debris. If you notice any remaining debris, scrub the area again to restore its shine.
Dry Using a Chamois or Soft Towel
To really help your vehicle shine after a wash, dry its entire exterior surface with a chamois or soft towel. Work from top to bottom and switch between drying cloths to make sure you polish your vehicle to a high shine. Inspect your vehicle’s paint for signs of residual automotive soap before patting yourself on the back for a job well done.
