5 Reasons Why Your BMW's Check Engine Light Might Be On

5 Reasons Why Your BMW's Check Engine Light Might Be On

It's just like any other day. You're driving around in your BMW and all of a sudden the check engine light comes on. What do you do? There are a few reasons why your check engine light might have come on, and it's important to figure out which one it is. That is one indicator light you never want to ignore. There may be nothing wrong with your engine, but it's worth investigating. You never know, an auto repair may be required, so it should be resolved as quickly as possible. Here are five reasons your check engine light might have come on.

Loose Gas Cap

A loose gas cap is the easiest fix of them all. Gas can evaporate from the tank if the cap is loose, and you don't want that happening. Your car senses the potential problem and triggers the check engine light in response. This is more common on older BMW models as the problem has fixed itself in newer models. If the gas cap is loose, you'll just need to tighten it. Once you do and drive about 50 miles, the light will probably go off on its own.

Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor is a small part and determines how much fuel the car is supposed to burn. If the sensor goes bad, it will need to be replaced. This can be a quick fix. You want to make sure the sensor is working so that the correct information is sent to the computer, which helps with gas mileage, too.

When you need to change the spark plug in a BMW

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs have been known to go bad from time to time, especially in an older model BMW. The spark plugs will ignite the air and fuel to ensure that power is delivered to your car. If the spark plugs need to be changed, the check engine light will come on. Changing the plugs isn’t a time-consuming task, but if you put off the problem for too long, it can lead to bigger problems — and more expensive ones as well.

Catalytic Converter

If you wait too long to replace your oxygen sensor, it can cause the catalytic converter to break, which is one of the main reasons why you should take the check engine light seriously when it appears. This can be a costly repair, and it is important to make sure an experienced technician works under the hood of your BMW for this one.

Fuel Injector

In some instances, an import auto repair may be needed. The fuel injector is responsible for gas getting into the engine, and if there is an issue, it can cause the engine to fail. It’s not too common, but it has been known to happen with various models of BMWs.
