As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, hybrid cars have gotten a lot of love from consumers. Perhaps the exception to that love is Volkswagen, who has recently come under fire over their hybrid car emissions. Hybrid cars are required to adhere to specific emission regulations, and a study found that Volkswagen hybrids did not meet those requirements.
The Volkswagen Emissions Scandal
U.S. regulators discovered that Volkswagen placed software into their cars that turned emission controls on during testing but turned it off during regular driving. Approximately 11 million vehicles around the globe are currently being affected by the scandal. The VW brand chief, Herbert Diess, has made an offer to workers for them to come forward about the internal investigation.
The discovery of Volkswagen’s cheating was revealed by researchers at West Virginia University who conducted on-road testing of the vehicles. During their tests, the researchers found that Volkswagen's hybrid emissions were approximately 40 times the permitted levels of nitrogen oxides. Volkswagen apparently used two types of technology to reduce the appearance of emissions of nitrogen oxides from the car by treating the emissions with urea or trapping the pollutants. It is unclear as to how the systems were modified and which ones were tampered with, which is part of the ongoing investigation.
The car maker, which is the largest in Europe, has also admitted to cheating on certifications for carbon dioxide emissions.
Best Hybrid Cars on the Market
On today’s market, there are more luxury hybrids available than ever before. Luxury hybrids are usually priced around $30,000 and above, and provide precise handling, outstanding acceleration, and luxury features throughout the interior.
One of the top hybrids is the 2015 Tesla Model S, which received a score of 9.4 out of 10 according to U.S. News & World Report. It also gave the car a safety rating of 10. There is also the 2015 Lexus GS hybrid, which is known for outstanding fuel economy as well as a luxurious cabin. It received an 8.6 score. The 2015 BMW I 3 is another popular luxury hybrid. The BMW provides sharp handling, and test drivers have been impressed especially by the electric powertrain. It received an overall score of 8.5 out of 10. Other highly-rated luxury hybrids include the 2015 Infiniti Q 50 hybrid and the 2016 Cadillac ELR.
Various benefits exist for driving hybrid cars, including reduced fuel costs, fewer emissions, as well as tax incentives. The performance of these vehicles is better than ever, too, which previously prevented people from exploring this technology.
